I unfortunately had an ETS date 98 days from a deployment to Iraq and as much as I begged to go back I was told the only way I can go is to re-enlist. How crappy is that? He would deploy for his unit’s entire deployment unless they made the decision to send him back and let him get out of the military. Given he is retiring that is unlikely to happen unless they had a lot of people get on the promotion list whatever rank he is to replace him.

Getting closer to retirement, I realize I lack one of the things I wanted in life the most: My time with the military hasn’t helped. Sure, I’ve dated, but after seeing my friends get divorced time and time again I never went that far. I guess my own fear, and the thought of having a person who would have to handle the burden of their loved one being half a world away has led me to worry too much about just trying to make it work.

We are already nine hours apart, and I plan on moving my son and me closer to him. Will that help at all? Sincerely, New Relationship Dear New, I promised myself that would be my year to start being more open and honest with everyone who writes to me.
I’m not saying I will be mean or surly, I just intend to be more candid about the situation. You said this is your first time with a military man. I’ve got four “don’ts” you need to keep in mind as you move forward. Don’t forget the man inside the uniform. I’ve learned over the years that some people go crazy over a man in uniform.
